18th March 2005
Here's a simple piece churned out of ZoeOS. It uses a few different techniques.
It's probably closest to hard house, but has very rigid timing and it totters close the insane with a relentless 4 to
the floor.
The purpose of it is more to demonstrate the sounds you can achieve in EOS with the help of a tool such as ZoeOS.
-
The piece features samples from the Orbit ROM (after alot of resampling, beat munging and re-processing in
ZoeOS).
-
Filterbanks of EOS voices have been used to achieve some of the squelching and whipping sounds in the second
half of the piece.
-
There is only a single 1-bar midi note constantly repeating throughout the whole piece - that's why the tune
only ever changes on 1-bar boundaries.
-
The piece is arranged very simply by manually changing presets on a single multimode channel.
-
Layers of sounds are added by linking presets to a top level preset (which is the one being changed on the
single midi channel).
-
It makes extensive use of delayed voices to sequence the sounds in the individual presets.
-
No modulation or controllers used.
-
In certain places in the tune you can hear some vocal sounding segments - they are not actually human voices,
but the the filters in the E-MU talking.

We will soon be finished our custom developed library that pours SMDI from Java. The benefits to be gained from
this development include:
-
Ultra reliable SMDI communications for ZoeOS - we will no longer drop out of Java and into C to make transfers

Automatic conversion of encoding formats and bit ordering in sample audio to suit the Emulator.

Automatic conversion of higher than 16 bit sample audio to Emulator friendly 16 bit prior to transfer.

You may now be hearing of
Emulator
X, the new PCI card based sampling system from E-MU. We have been informed (and have known for some time) that
this new product does
not
support editing of the existing hardware Emulator series. To our recently acquired ZoeOS customers who wanted a
dedicated hardware editor, don't be concerned, there is no overlap between ZoeOS and the Emulator X.
To those of you who wish to hold onto their hardware sampler in addition to purchasing the Emulator X, naturally we
recommend ZoeOS as the perfect editor for your hardware complement.

The ZoeOS demo has already gone through a number of iterations since its appearance on October 27th. Many bugs have been
resolved as well as
the addition of numerous feature enhancements. The user interface has also taken on a new look.
For those eager to obtain the full-version, we've pushed out the commercial release date so we can get the
product as stable as possible and get all those features
customers have requested ready to go!
We would like to hear from more people about their experience with ZoeOS, good or bad - it will help us make this an
even more compelling product.
